Living Ecosphere

The self sustaining aquatic ecosystem.

Self sustaining ecospheres were originally invented and used by NASA in order to study the Earth’s ecosphere. Now you can own your own living ecosphere complete with shrimp, algae and micro-organisms that together form a self sustaining ecosystem.

The shrimp breathes in the oxygen and consumes the algae and bacteria and then they in turn break down the shrimp’s waste into life sustaining nutrients that the algae can use. Then the shrimp and bacteria release carbon dioxide into the sphere which the algae then use to form oxygen within the ecosphere. Finally the shrimp will breathe in the oxygen and the whole cycle will repeat itself over and over again.

Ecosphere Aquarium

The average life span of an ecosphere is 2-3 years but many well maintained ecospheres have been known to last much longer.

The specs.

The ecosphere is made from hand blown glass and only needs indirect light as well as a comfortable room temperature (60F – 80F).

No water changes or feeding is ever required making this almost completely no maintenance.

The verdict?

A simple but impressive gadget that makes for a great conversation piece around the home or as a unique gift for that hard-to-buy for friend.
